Paraje Natural Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja is a nature reserve. It is part of the Sierra Bermeja mountain range, which is known for its unique geology, rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes.
Sierra Bermeja is the reddish mountain range located just north/north-east of Finca Alamo
Key features:
- Geology: The area is known for its peridotite formations, which give the mountains a reddish color (“bermeja” means “reddish” in Spanish). These rocks are rare and create special soil conditions that affect the local plant and animal life.
- Flora: The reserve is home to many plant varieties, including the endemic pinsapo fir (Abies pinsapo), a relic of the Ice Age. This tree is a symbol of the region and is found in small pockets throughout the park.
- Fauna: The varied ecosystem is home to a wealth of wildlife, including mountain goats, birds of prey such as eagles and vultures, as well as other Mediterranean species.
- Hiking trails and views:
- The area offers great hiking opportunities, with trails leading to panoramic views. One of the most popular routes is the ascent to Cerro de los Reales, where you can enjoy views of the Mediterranean, the city of Estepona and even Africa on a clear day.
- The trails have different levels of difficulty, so both beginners and experienced hikers can find something suitable.
- Climate: The proximity to the coast provides a mild Mediterranean climate, but temperatures can be significantly lower at higher altitudes.
- Accessibility: The nature reserve is easily accessible from towns such as Estepona and Casares, making it a great destination for a day trip from the Costa del Sol.
If you’re planning a visit, make sure you have good walking shoes, plenty of water and a camera to capture the spectacular scenery!
