Baños de la Hedionda – Casares’ magical sulphur bath in wild nature
Hidden between river valleys and limestone cliffs outside Casares lies one of Andalusia’s most fascinating places: Baños de la Hedionda. This isn’t just a bathing spot – it’s a blend of Roman history, healing springs and raw nature.
For many, this is one of the Costa del Sol’s best-kept secrets.
A bath with 2000 years of history
Baños de la Hedionda is known for its sulphurous spring water, which has been used since Roman times. According to legend, Julius Caesar bathed here to cure a skin condition and had the baths extended afterwards. The springs and baths also have Arabic and later historical layers, and the site is protected as a cultural monument. ( Ayuntamiento de Casares)
The name Hedionda roughly means “the smelly one” – a reference to the distinct smell of sulphur. But it’s precisely this mineral-rich water that has made the place famous.
A natural spa in the middle of the landscape
What’s special about Hedionda is that it’s not just an old bathhouse.
It’s an entire natural landscape
Around the Roman bath itself you will find:
- Natural bumps and pools
- Small waterfalls
- Riverbanks with picnic spots
- Limestone formations and canyons
- Hiking trails through untouched nature
The water stays around 21°C all year round and many people come both to swim and for the special nature experience.(Vacalia.com)

There are few places in Europe where you can:
- Bathing in a Roman sulphur bath
- Swim in natural river pools close by

- Experience history and wild nature at the same time
It almost feels like discovering a secret oasis.
