With its sunny beaches, charming old town and vibrant cultural offerings, Estepona is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. But did you know that the city also has a rich and fascinating history dating back to ancient times? Let’s dive into the history of Estepona and discover the intriguing stories and monuments that have shaped this unique city.

A little history

The area around Estepona has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and there is archaeological evidence that the area has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Several excavations have found evidence of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements, including remains of fortifications and pottery. Petroglyphs and burial chambers from this period have also been found.

Roman times

During the Roman period, Estepona was an important port and trading town due to its strategic location on the Mediterranean. Several monumental buildings were built, including a large fish salt factory that can still be seen today. Many of the Roman ruins are still visible today, including a Roman villa that is open to visitors.

Arabic time

In the Middle Ages, Estepona was conquered by the Moors and became part of the Islamic Al-Andalus. Under Arab rule, the city was developed and expanded and a number of buildings were constructed, including castles, fortresses and mosques. One of the most impressive monuments from this period is the Castle of San Luis, which still stands proudly on a hill above the city.

Christian conquest and modernization

In 1485, Estepona was conquered by the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, and became part of the province of Málaga. Due to its strategic location, the city was subject to repeated attacks by pirates and buccaneers. In 1570, the city was completely destroyed by a French invasion and was forced to rebuild itself from the ruins. After the conquest, the city was modernized and expanded, and several buildings and monuments were built, including churches and monasteries. The beautiful church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, located in the center of the city, is an example of this Christian architecture.

Modern times

Today, Estepona is a modern and prosperous city, but it has still preserved much of its rich history and culture. The city has a lively old town with narrow streets and beautiful buildings, and there are many monuments and museums that tell the history of the city.
