The mountain ridge rises steeply from around 400 meters above sea level to around 900 meters at the highest parts. The vegetation is typically Mediterranean with cork oak, holm oak, wild olive, dwarf palm lily and aromatic shrubs. Spanish ibex, wild boar and foxes can also be seen on the slopes.   <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"11my1se\" data-start=\"3310\" data-end=\"3328\">Popular tops<\/h2>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"91e472\" data-start=\"3330\" data-end=\"3360\">Pico Las Chapas (943 m)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3362\" data-end=\"3593\">This is the highest peak in the Sierra Crestellina and a natural destination for many hikers. From here, there are panoramic views of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and, on clear days, all the way to Morocco. <\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"18s3jy5\" data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"3622\">Pico Casares (906 m)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3624\" data-end=\"3852\">Another popular peak along the characteristic ridge. Many people combine it with Pico Las Chapas on the same hike. The hike follows the limestone ridge and offers airy sections and impressive views.  <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"14bm5e\" data-start=\"3854\" data-end=\"3870\">Hiking opportunities<\/h2>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"cwjfyv\" data-start=\"3872\" data-end=\"3898\">Mirador de los Buitres<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3900\" data-end=\"4202\">The most accessible hike goes to the viewpoint known as &#8220;Gribbenes utsiktspunkt&#8221;. The trail is relatively short and suitable for most people. The reward is stunning views of Casares, Gibraltar and the vulture colony. This is the classic hike for first-time visitors.   <\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"vt9rw\" data-start=\"4204\" data-end=\"4231\">Catill\u00f3n lookout point<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4233\" data-end=\"4445\">A popular viewpoint on the south side of the mountain ridge. It offers some of the best panoramic views in the area, with the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Andalusian mountains to the north. <\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"jt9efb\" data-start=\"4447\" data-end=\"4476\">The ridge tour over Crestellina<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4478\" data-end=\"4822\">For experienced hikers, there is a more demanding route along the entire limestone ridge between Pico Las Chapas and Pico Casares. The hike is not particularly long, but some sections require the use of your hands and a bit of splitting. The views and proximity to birds of prey make this one of the most spectacular hikes in the area.  <\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"11jqhei\" data-start=\"4824\" data-end=\"4858\">Easy walks around Casares<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4860\" data-end=\"5127\">For those looking for quieter walks, there is a large network of trails around Casares. These run through Mediterranean forests, agricultural landscapes and small valleys with views of the Sierra Crestellina. Several of the routes are suitable for families.  <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"dwjfa1\" data-start=\"5129\" data-end=\"5178\">One of the Costa del Sol&#8217;s best preserved natural corners<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5180\" data-end=\"5698\">Sierra Crestellina may not be as well known as the great nature parks of Andaluc\u00eda, but that&#8217;s precisely why the area has retained much of its original character. The combination of dramatic limestone cliffs, enormous vultures, rare eagles and magnificent views make this one of the most fascinating nature areas near the Costa del Sol. The category lies between a nature reserve and a national park in terms of protection status. The aim is to protect the natural values while allowing the area to be used for outdoor recreation, research and nature-based tourism. Sierra Crestellina is also a bird protection area (ZEPA) and part of the EU&#8217;s network of protected areas.   <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1099\" data-end=\"1120\" data-section-id=\"f3ho9f\">The name Crestellina<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1122\" data-end=\"1506\">The name &#8220;Crestellina&#8221; probably comes from the Spanish word <em data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1194\">cresta<\/em> &#8211; &#8220;comb&#8221; or &#8220;back&#8221;. It&#8217;s easy to understand when you see the mountain. The narrow limestone ridge forms a pronounced, saw-toothed crest that stretches north-south and dominates the landscape above Casares. Although its height doesn&#8217;t seem particularly impressive compared to the big mountains of Andaluc\u00eda, its unobstructed location means that the views are surprisingly expansive.  From the summit you can see large parts of the Genal Valley, the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and, on clear days, the outline of the Rif Mountains in Morocco.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"536\" data-end=\"896\">What makes Pico Las Chapas particularly interesting is that the peak is located on the characteristic limestone ridge that has given the Sierra Crestellina its name. The ridge is narrow in several places, with steep drops down to the valley sides. The landscape is typical karst terrain, shaped over millions of years by water erosion in the limestone.  <\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1iqzjg8\" data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"947\">One of the most beautiful viewpoints at Casares<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"949\" data-end=\"1078\">For many hikers, Pico Las Chapas is the natural main peak in the area. The reward at the top is an almost 360-degree view: <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1332\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1i9yaek\" data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1161\">The white village <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Casares<\/span><\/span> is located just below.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"6dc6w6\" data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1197\">The Strait of Gibraltar can be seen to the south.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1tzpqk0\" data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1281\">To the west you can see into the mountains around <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Serran\u00eda de Ronda<\/span><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1bp80yv\" data-start=\"1282\" data-end=\"1332\">To the east, the Costa del Sol stretches along the coast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1334\" data-end=\"1419\">Many describe the view as one of the best in the western part of M\u00e1laga province.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"mtwdz4\" data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1446\">Vultures up close and personal<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1448\" data-end=\"1882\">On the way to the top, you will pass several areas where the griffon vultures utilize the buoyancy along the cliffs. Because the birds often hover along the mountain ridge, you can experience them at very close range. It&#8217;s not uncommon for birds with a wingspan of almost three meters to pass at eye level while standing on the ridge or summit. Sierra Crestellina is known for having one of the most important vulture colonies in M\u00e1laga province.   <\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1rxcu73\" data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"1904\">The trip to the top<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1906\" data-end=\"2213\">The most common route starts from the area south or east of Casares and follows trails up towards the ridge. The ascent itself is normally not technically difficult, but the final sections can be steep and rocky. Experienced hikers may continue along the ridge towards other peaks on the Crestellina ridge.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2237\">The tour is best suited for:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2238\" data-end=\"2429\">\n<li data-section-id=\"p5kl3a\" data-start=\"2238\" data-end=\"2278\">Hikers with normal to good fitness.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1s2lbfp\" data-start=\"2279\" data-end=\"2309\">Nature and bird enthusiasts.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"5c5irm\" data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2363\">Photographers who want a view of the Strait of Gibraltar.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1sezq70\" data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2429\">Those who like airy mountain ridges without it being pure climbing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"18cregt\" data-start=\"2431\" data-end=\"2450\">Best time<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2719\">The most pleasant time to climb Pico Las Chapas is from October to May. Summer can be very hot and there is little shade on the upper part of the mountain. Early morning or late afternoon often provides both the best light and the best chance of seeing birds of prey active.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"3023\">In other words, Pico Las Chapas is not only the highest peak in the Sierra Crestellina &#8211; it&#8217;s also the place where you really get to experience the combination of dramatic limestone nature, huge vultures and the The steep limestone walls provide perfect nesting sites and the area is home to the largest colony of griffon vultures in M\u00e1laga province. <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1826\" data-end=\"1842\" data-section-id=\"1oaq7z4\">The goose vultures<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"2279\">The most characteristic species is the griffon vulture<em data-start=\"1933\" data-end=\"1946\">(Gyps fulvus<\/em>). With a wingspan of up to almost three meters, it is one of Europe&#8217;s largest birds. On warm days, dozens of vultures can be seen circling overhead, taking advantage of upward air currents.
